“Put Your Shoes On!”

The first time I heard the expression “Put Your Shoes On!” was during the campaign of our now Senator Raphael Warnock. He tells a story about his dad using this expression. Since then, I heard it was a typical Southern saying spoken by those in our grandparent’s generation. Well, I often hear this saying from someone dear to me. That is a story for another day. What exactly does the saying mean? Let me explain my interpretation in terms of a relationship.

Primarily, when someone asks you to “Put Your Shoes On!” they ask you to prepare to do something. We are only entirely in dress form with our shoes. As a matter of fact, the last thing we usually put on is our shoes as we prepare for our day. Otherwise, shoes signify it’s time to get a stepping! Therefore, there comes a time in relationships we must put our feelings into action and do something. Is it fair to keep a person hanging on without any time frames of where we see we are in the relationship? Or the direction we are moving toward? Think about it!

Undoubtedly, no one wants or likes to rush into major relationship decisions. I certainly do not. Indeed that is not a wise thing to do. Nevertheless, one must expect someone to be aware of the purpose of the relationship. Once the goal is known, conversations and time spent together should create some timeline of events. I can tell you this from most individuals I know who are dating or looking to date; they are expecting at some point sooner than later for the relationship to end in a marriage partnership. “Put Your Shoes On!”

As I conclude, think about what it means to “Put Your Shoes On!” to you. What are you preparing for in your relationship? Or will you prepare for in a future relationship? How long will it take to get your shoes on and start stepping? If you have any thoughts, please share. Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ: Philippians 1:6. I’ll be back next week with a new post, “Getting There!”

Be encouraged, and God bless!
